A location-based game often uses your everyday world as the game board. Thus your geographical position and physically place becomes a part of the game. This means that you often need to move around in the real world to be able to play the LB game. Most of the games today use some sort of positioning technology such as GPS or CELL ID, but they do not have to; flash mobs are considered a location-based game too.

Location-based games have been around since the beginning of 2000. The phenomenon has come a long way since the early days, where pioneers introduced titles such as Botfighters, Undercover and Mogi-Mogi. The problems were massive and the obstacles many. Today, LB games and social services are gaining market and interest from not only the gamers and consumers, but also established companies such as Google and Apple. We have only seen the beginning of the LB era.
